Abstract

The descriptive study was undertaken for the purpose of evaluating physical and mental health Problems of nursing students by Cornell Medical Index.
The sampling method was non-probability, Purposive Sampling technique. The subjects of this study were comprised of 293 nursing students of the 2nd and the 3rd year of the R. Junior College of Nursing.
Data was collected over a period of 16 days from the 15th to the 30th of November, 1984 by the means of the questionnaire.
Data was analyzed by computer utilizing Statistical Analysis System.
The results of this study were as follows:
1. The incidence of complaints about physical health problems were higher among the 3rd year students than those of the 2nd year in the categories of cardiovascular system (t=1.98, P< .05), and miscellaneous diseases (t=. 264, P < .01).
2. The Day Class students showed higher incidence of complaints about physical and mental health problems than those of the Evening Class students in the categories of nervous system (t=2.73, P <.01), fatigability (t=2.06, P < .05), and depression (t=2.22, P <.05).
3. When compared by religion, the incidence of complaints about physical health problems were higher among the Buddhist students than those with other religions in the categories of cardiovascular system (F=4.47, P <.005), and miscellaneous diseases (F=4.94, P <.005).
4. The incidence of complaints about physical health problems were higher among the students who do not have jobs than those who have in the category of miscellaneous diseases (t=3.14, P <.005).
5. Those who are most unsatisfied with their economic status showed the highest incidence of complaints about physical and mental health problems in the categories of cardiovascular system (F=3.87, P <.05), and Respiratory system (F=4.11, P <.05), Inadequacy (F=4.61, P <.05), Frequency of illness (F=7.36, P.<.005), Depression (F=5.29, P <.01), Anxietry (F=6.15, P <.005).
6. The students who came from the cities showed higher incidence of complaints about their physical health problems than those from the rural areas in the categories of eyes and ears problems (t=2.47, P <.05), and respiratory system (t=2.64, P <.01).
